Evolution of Law of the Land

The history of any nation would always start with the stone age where people, yet to be socialized lived. The evolved to be nomads seeking a livelihood from place to place. Further, they domesticated animals and reared them for food. Later, the nomads started settling at various places, adjacent to rivers, in the world forming a group of settlers.

As the people started to settle at many places, the domestication of animals and agriculture flourished. The society started balancing itself among people who produced various commodities which are in need to the society. The settlers distributed onus of producing the basic needs among themselves. So came the idea of exchanging goods and service for the produce they made for the society. The mutual exchange later became trade as the production of commodities reached beyond the requirements. Whoever had in excess were considered wealthy and people who failed to make it a day were starved of their needs. Thus, the idea of property and wealth came into existence.

As the time evolved, the exchange system was replaced with coins and so came the present day trade. While the wealthy had more than enough, the starved had nothing. To reduce the tension and social unrest, the norms were developed in the society promoted by values of the society. The norms were usually the guideline that a person in the society must follow. The values are the target that a person must achieve through following the norms established by the society. Usually, guilds or kings who control a boundary of land establish such norms. When such norms along with punitive action for deviance from the norms were named laws of the land. Usually, norms have it origin from the ideology of the society. For instance, stealing is considered as bad then it is a norm not to steal in that society. When a punishment is attached to stealing then it will have the force of law.

On contrary, if a society promotes a norm that haves must share their benefits with have-nots. Deviance of this norm is declared to be a wrong. Both instances mentioned above contradict each others. So in simple words, ideology of the society decides the norms and values in a society, where one man's ideology becomes another man's reality.

The law of the land which were actually based upon the ideology of the society evolve with respect to time. When the society degrades and the need of new ideology to revive such society is felt, a new law of the land will emerge. While a thing which seems to be correct may appear to be wrong tomorrow. If the law fails to evolve, the society rot which is evident with the unrest in that society. Even the leader who raised a successful society will be seen as person who betrayed them. Hence, the law of the land must be considered as a subject which evolves exponentially with respect to time.
